Write a personal statement of no more than 350 words describing why you wish to pursue a career in orchestra administration, what led you to this point, what makes you a strong candidate for admission to this seminar, and to the orchestra field in general. This narrative is an opportunity to introduce yourself and share with the Selection Committee your short and long-term career goals, passion for orchestral music, commitment to the field, and how participation in this program will enrich your present role and professional objectives.

  1. Given the challenges facing American orchestras today, what do you think are the qualities and characteristics that a successful orchestra leader needs to have? Why?
  2. Please describe a time in your work with others when you faced a difficult interpersonal challenge. What dilemmas were evident to you? How did you respond and what actions did you take? How did you involve others? What did you learn about yourself in the process?
  3. If you were to start a job next week as the executive director of Orchestra X, what would be the first actions you would take? With whom would you consult?
  4. If you had infinite resources to build the orchestra of your dreams, what elements would it include that might differentiate it from the orchestras you know.

Letters of Recommendation

Please arrange to have two letters of recommendation sent on your behalf to We are interested in hearing from individuals who can speak to your abilities and potential in the orchestra management field, specifically giving examples of demonstrated organizational abilities, initiative, maturity, intellectual capacity, professional curiosity, ambition, independent thinking, and overall interpersonal and leadership skills.
